چکیده

A model for performance of an axially symmetric pore with the curved generatrix is developed. Oxygen transport along axis and in radial direction through a thin ionomer film separating volume from Pt/C surface taken into account. functional formulated, Euler–Lagrange equation solved numerically optimal shape. This shape close to cubic paraboloid converging toward membrane. Polarization curves show superior over cylindrical same active (side) area. The results suggest loading low-Pt electrodes.

Reduced models for the cathode catalyst layer in PEM fuel cells

Abstract: We study a pore scale model for the catalyst layer on the cathode side of a fuel cell, where hydrogen and oxygen combine at catalyst sites. Our model distinguishes microscopically the phases of rigid structure, electrolyte, pore-space, and catalyst. The oxygen concentration and the protonic potential are described by diffusion equations with reaction terms on the catalyst’s surface. F...

Water Management in the Cathode Side of a PEM Fuel Cell

A one dimensional isothermal mathematical modeling of cathode side of a Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) fuel cell is developed for the water management problem. Water transport is investigated in both cathode Gas Diffusion Layer (GDL) and membrane through solving appropriate equations for fluid flow and mass transport in GDL and water transport within the membrane. The gaseous mixture flowing in...

The Impact of Wettability on Effective Properties of Cathode Catalyst Layer in a Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell

The produced liquid water in cathode catalyst layer (CCL) has significant effect on the operation of proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC). To investigate this effect, the transport of oxygen in CCL in the presence of immiscible liquid water is studied applying a two-dimensional pore scale model. The CCL was reconstructed as an agglomerated system. To explore the wettability effects, diffe...

Modeling and Optimization of non - isothermal two- phase flow in the cathode gas diffusion layer of PEM fuel cell

In this paper, a non-isothermal two-phase flow in the cathode gas diffusion layer (GDL) of PEM fuel cell is modeled. The governing equations including energy, mass and momentum conservation equations are solved by numerical methods. Also, the optimal values of the effective parameters such as the electrodes porosity, gas diffusion layer (GDL) thickness and inlet relative humidity are calculated...
